Nandrolone was probably among the first steroids to be used as a doping agent in sports in the 1960s. It has been banned at the Olympics since 1974.

A sterile oleaginous solution containing per mL: Nandrolone Decanoate 300 mg with Benzyl Alcohol 5% as solubilizer/preservative, in Sesame Oil q.s. Nandrolone decanoate (C₂₈H₄₄O₃) occurs as a fine, white to creamy white, crystalline powder. It is odorless, or may have a slight odor. Nandrolone decanoate is soluble in chloroform, in alcohol, in acetone, and in vegetable oils. It is practically insoluble in water.

Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone. Certain clinical effects and adverse reactions demonstrate the androgenic properties of this class of drugs. Complete dissociation of anabolic and androgenic effects has not been achieved. This is attributed to the fact that, whereas testosterone is potentiated via conversion into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in androgenic tissues, the opposite is true with nandrolone and similar AAS (i.e., other 19-nortestosterone derivatives). As such, nandrolone-like AAS, namely nandrolone esters, are the most frequently used AAS in clinical settings in which anabolic effects are desired; for instance, in the treatment of AIDS-associated cachexia, severe burns, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, AAS with a very high ratio of anabolic to androgenic action like nandrolone still have significant androgenic effects and can produce symptoms of virilization like hirsutism and voice deepening in women and children with extended use.

Nandrolone effects in bodybuilding

Nandrolone Decanoate has the potential to improve bone density and muscle growth. Androgen therapy (such as nandrolone) can result in loss of diabetic control and should be used with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus. Close monitoring of blood glucose is recommended.

Nandrolone decanoate is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy. It is not known if anabolic steroids are excreted in human milk. Alternative methods to breast-feeding are recommended.

INDICATION

Nandrolone Decanoate is indicated for the management of the anemia of renal insufficiency and has been shown to increase hemoglobin and red cell mass. Surgically induced anephric patients have been reported to be less responsive.
